Spiced Rums…so many choices!

At the gym last night a friend asked me about our new site www.RumAdventures.com, then she went on to say she was new to rums and wanted some recommendations.

We talked briefly and it came up that she liked Spiced Rums, such as Captain Morgan. That gave me enough information to give her some recommendations based on my personal experiences and the spiced rums availability in this area of Florida, US.

I have tried 27 Spiced Rums and their flavors vary considerably, while some are addicting with hints of vanilla, caramel, butterscotch, cinnamon, and or nutmeg others are just forgettable…

Some of my favorites in this category are…in no particular order…

RONDIAZ® Gran Reserva Spiced Rum is blended with 3-year-old aged rum to increase the complexity and depth of flavors of vanilla, caramel, and hints of oak resulting in richer, rounder, more refined rum that can be enjoyed on the rocks for the purist, or in any type of customary spiced rum mixer for the younger consumers. RonDiaz rums are an import from Barbados.

This elegant rum embodies the color of a fiery red citrine with golden highlights. The initial aroma is that of natural vanilla, followed quickly by sweet cinnamon and ending with a touch of nutmeg.

When swirled in a snifter, the rum’s body comes across as silky with a medium to high viscosity. In the palate, the body is heavy and unctuous; it has vanilla centric notes and a high sweetness level that lingers before ending with a slightly bitter caramel touch.

In an industry where many spiced rums are opting for higher proofs as market differentiators, RonDiaz has opted for a lower proof and a higher sugar content. Enjoy the rum neat, on the rocks, as a digestif or with mixers low in sweetness.” – GotRum?

Brinley Gold Shipwreck Rum Spiced – Four-year-aged, molasses-based, spiced rum, aged in American oak once-charred barrels, hand crafted on the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Kitts, since 1986. Blended with natural vanilla extract, nutmeg, clove, orange, and exotic island spices. Some spiced rums are merely colored, not aged; but this nut-brown spirit is made from a base of rum aged for four years in oak barrels. The recipe is dedicated to an actual British troop ship that sunk off the St. Kitts’ coast in 1782.

There are also some black spiced rums that deserve to be in their own separate category, they each have their own unique taste and tend to have stronger flavors and a higher alcohol content. Some examples in these categories are Kraken and Capt. Morgan Black Spiced Rum.

Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum – A special dark, spiced version of Captain Morgan, made with Caribbean rums, spices and natural flavorings, and matured in oak. Great on its own, or add your favorite ginger beer or cola. It is s crafted from only the finest Caribbean Blackstrap rum and select ingredients: clove, cassia bark, and vanilla with other spices and flavors added in, and then finished with double charred blackened oak for a taste as legendary as the Captain himself.

At 94.6 proof Captain Morgan Black is at a higher proof than the standard Captain Morgan, which is 70 proof. This extra proof gives Captain Morgan Black a much stronger flavor delivery and it helps it hold up much better in cocktails.

The nose on Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum is soft vanilla, reminiscent of vanilla extract, with a hint of underlining spice and oak.

“Captain Morgan® Black Spiced Rum is inspired by the true story of Captain Henry Morgan’s burial on the shores of Port Royal Harbour, Jamaica in 1688. Shortly after his burial, an earthquake rocked the shores of Jamaica, washing the Captain’s casket out to sea, never to be seen again. Legend has it that his restless spirit lives on to this day, sailing the Caribbean seas in search of his mortal remains. The bold, dark spiced rum is best enjoyed on the rocks.”

Specifications: 94.6 proof / 47.3% Alc/Vol

Kraken Black Spiced Rum – a Caribbean black spiced rum named after the kraken, a mythical giant squid-like sea monster. Kraken Rum was introduced in 2010. The base rum is from Trinidad, distilled from naturally sweet molasses made from locally-grown sugar cane. The rum is aged 1–2 years and then blended with a mix of 11 spices, including cinnamon, ginger and clove. The liquid is black, revealing hints of brown when held up to the light. The Kraken Rum is gluten, wheat, nut and lactose free as well as vegan.

The bottle is styled after a Victorian rum bottle, with two hoop handles based on the tradition of hanging a bottle to prevent breakages.

Specifications:  94 proof / 47% Alc/Vol – http://www.krakenrum.com/

Beside having had these 4 rums on the rocks, with Diet Coke, and with ginger beer I have also used all of them in my own Rum Cake and Caribbean Chili recipes with amazing results…but that is another story…

Salud!
